Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Disappointing

Shorgul created much ‘shorgul’ before its release as it is loosely based on a communal riots that broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar in 2013, one of the worst episodes of violence in the state. Some political parties and individuals were unhappy as the movie makes indirect yet obvious references to names that made headlines during the time. The film kicked up interest as ‘Udta Punjab’ generated after a brawl with CFBC due to its Punjab’s drug menace. However, Udta Punjab lived up to the expectation and turned out to be an outstanding film of the year. But Shorgul comes off as a shallow attempt to dig deep into issues behind such uprisings.
A Muslim girl called Zainab and a Hindu boy called Raghu grow up as friends. He falls in love with her but she is unaware of his feelings. When her fiancé Saleem discovers the truth, it leads to tension between all parties involved and ultimately, an unplanned act of violence that is used by Ranjeet Om to incite riots in the town. Caught in the crossfire along with the youngsters is Raghu’s father, Chaudhary (Ashutosh Rana), a respected local leader who is constantly at loggerheads with Om. Believable plotline, as you can see. The execution is a different matter altogether.
The film is a perfect example of good intention but bad direction and weak screenplay, causing the film muddled. Confusion rules, as the film progresses in time and goes nowhere as a narrative. Violence, agitation and revenge take precedent over everything else. The riot scenes are generic, lengthy and chaotic making the entire experience tedious and boring.
The performances are earnest, especially Jimmy Sheirgill and Ashutosh Rana. You'll find yourself deeply engrossed in their war of words and clash of ideas. But the film doesn't deserve such heartfelt acting. Every time you try to invest in their characters, the director shifts your attention to a loud Hiten Tejwani (who looks every bit like his brooding character from the daily soap Kutumb). Actress Suha Gezen is a misfit and bites into more than she can chew. Given that she is the central character, her performance is the film's weakest link. In a pivotal scene, she stands surrounded by dead bodies, screaming for help in an overdramatic (read -laughable) manner.
The Muzaffarnagar riots are a blot on contemporary history and the wounds from that blaze are yet to heal. It is sad that makers used that tragic reference to draw audiences into a loud, boring and an ordinary film.
