Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : The film is packed to the brim with all essentials of a masala-entertainer but still it has nothing new to offer! _________________________________________________________

People always love to watch when some one is fooled in a smart and entertaining way. This simple fact is very much utilized by the film makers as their main plot to make some of the most entertaining films in the past. Some good ones are Bunty aur Bubbly, Badmash Company, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl etc. Working on the same lines director Kunal Deshmukh with his favorite actor Emraan Hashmi has come up with Raja Natwarlal. In this film Emraan Hashmi will be playing the character of a con man for the first time which could be one of the strong reason behind Emran doing this film. As per the director this the movie will be the best con film Bollywood has ever witnessed. So lets see how far this statement is true

Story:-

The story revolves around a conman Raja (Emraan Hashmi) who is not happy with being a small time scamster and wants to make it big and in this quest, he is helped by his partner-in-crime Raghav (Deepak Tijori).

With his help, Raja manages to pull off a huge con-job and earns lakh of rupees. However, he is unaware of the fact that the money belongs to Varda Yadav (Kay Kay Menon) who is a big time gangster from Cape Town. Raghav gets killed and Raja is stuck in a web of crimes. To take revenge from Varda, Raja turns to Yogi (Paresh Rawal) in Dharamshala to mentor him.

Will Raja be able to take revenge for Raghav’s killing or will he get further entangled in the mess? The answers to these questions are what forms the rest of ‘Raja Natwarlal’!

Positive Points:-

Raja Natwarlal has everything that can be expected in a masala-entertainer. Director Kunal Deshmukh has made sure to add in that edge in a few scenes that makes the movie engaging.

Emraan is convincing in his act and it’s only his acting that takes the film to a different level. Paresh Rawal is absolutely fabulous and Kay Kay Menon is extremely convincing and vulnerable in his part. Kay Kay’s expressions and dialogue delivery are top-notch.

Negative Points:-

The worst part about the film is the female lead Humaima Mallik as this Pakistani actress is no heroine material at all. She neither has those convincingly good looks nor does she act well. Also many good actors like Zeeshan Khan have been totally wasted in the movie and this is a bummer.

The movie is sure edgy in parts, but there are also quite a few predictable twists that were not required. The second half only sees characters entering in and out of the screen with half of them having no apparent significance on the narrative.

Technical Points:-

Director Kunal Deshmukh has not proven his worth in his last venture ‘Jannat’ and ‘Raja Natwarlal’ is no exception. The direction is extremely weak and the fact that this film has an involvement of cricket as well makes you think that the director lacks creativity.

In a struggle to create the element of suspense, the movie loses its grip. The screenplay is loose and the editing could have been sharper while the dialogues are just about ok. While the first half is fast paced, the second half is slow and loses its grip. Unlike previous Emraan movies, the songs of Raja Natwarlal are not that great and except of ‘Tere Hoke Rahenge’ none of the songs stay with you.

Raja Natwarlal is an upcoming Bollywood crime comedy film directed by Kunal Deshmukh and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures. The film features Emraan Hashmi in the title role, alongside Humaima Malik, Paresh Rawal and Kay Kay Menon. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed music for the film. The film is expected to be released on 29 August 2014
