Movie Review

Verdict : Good entertainer with time pass masala

As the trend of cop flicks gains pace in Bollywood, we now have yet another young actor donning the cop role in the form of ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero’. Shahid Kapoor and Rajkumar Santoshi join hands for this film that also has ‘Barfi’ fame Ileana cast as the female lead. Produced by Tips films, this comic entertainer has released today and so let’s see find out more about it.

Story:-

Vishwas Rao (Shahid Kapoor) is a small town boy who dreams of becoming a famous actor. His mother (Padmini Kolhapure), on the other hand, has different plans for him and wants him to become an honest police officer. Soon enough, Vishwas travels to Mumbai to appear for a police exam and once he reaches Mumbai, he quickly shifts his focus on becoming an actor. Thanks to a certain turn of events,

the Mumbai police as well as the goons of the city start to believe that Vishwas is an actual cop. Soon enough, Vishwas and his mother get into trouble with the dreaded gangster Gundappa (Saurabh Shukla) and his gang. How will the mother and son get out of this mess? And will Vishwas’s mother find out and accept the truth about her son? The answers to these questions are what the rest of ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero’ is all about.

Positive Points:-

In this film, Shahid Kapoor is neither ‘Dabangg’ nor ‘Singham’ but has smartly managed to amalgamate all the latest cop roles. Ileana D’Cruz looks beautiful and it was a refreshing change to see her in a modern avatar after Barfi! Other characters like Darshan Jariwala and Sanjay Mishra are entertaining in their respective roles.

Saurabh Shukla, as usual, is at his best and is a complete laugh riot.Another plus point about the movie is Salman Khan’s cameo which lasts for just around two minute but then Salman manages to leave an impact in that time as well.

Nagative Points:-

As it is absolutely clear from the trailers, Shahid tries extremely hard to be funny and also hams in many of the sequences. The script is weak as the writer seems to have adapted a few scenes from the director’s earlier movies like ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ and ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’. Ileana acts well but unfortunately her character does not have too much importance.

While the first half atleast has dialogues that will have the audiences laughing their lungs out, the second half is plain boring. In the second half, director Santoshi forgets that he is making a comedy as the movie turns into a serious thriller. The most disappointing part of the film is its muddled climax sequence that seems to be a direct lift from ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’.

Technical Aspects:-

The music of the film is pretty good and songs like ‘Khali Pili’ and ‘Dhating Naach’ are refreshing. Though all the numbers have been shot and choreographed stunningly and have a lot of production value, their positioning in the screenplay however is not good. The cinematography is good as the camera beautifully covers the best areas of Mumbai. The background score is amusing and goes well with the comic sequences.

The editing could have been a little better while the dialogues are funny only in the first half. Raj Kumar Santoshi’s direction is disappointing and the screenplay lacks substance. The length of the film could have been a little shorter with a few climax sequences being omitted completely.

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is a Bollwood romantic comedy film starring Shahid Kapoor and Ileana DCruz .The film was produced by Ramesh Taurani of Tips Music Films and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, who earlier directed films such as Ghayal  (1990), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Khakee(2004) and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009). The film was released on 20 Sept. 2013.
