Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh starts on a gripping note where Durga a working woman realises that her teenager paralysed daughter has been abducted. A car knocked her down while she was rushing to save her daughter.
The film is set in small cities of West Bengal, Chandan Nagar and Kalimpong. Gradually, the story releases the layer from letting us know, Durga’s bitter past to how she reaches ChandanNagar from Kalimpong. We get to know that the film deals with a sensitive issue like child abuse.
What’s hot: Sujoy Ghosh brilliantly navigated the story with full sensitivity and kept the suspense alive. The film makes you glued to your seat with the meaty central plot with strong performances by its primary players and most importantly, a chilling villain at the centre, which raises the risks for Durga Rani Singh AKA Vidya Sinha.
What’s not: 2012 released Kahaani was a game changer as a Hindi thriller. Without any single song, dance, romance or any intimate scene, the female protagonist with a huge baby bump moves around the city to find her lost husband. Most importantly, Kahaani was unpredictable until its last scene. However, Kahaani 2 missed that one. The second half can be anticipated to some extent.
As for characters, I missed Bob Biswas, the innocent faced brutal murderer and not-so-handsome Parambrata as the inspector. Arjun Rampal and his dapper look exaggerate as an inspector compared to Kharaj Bandyopadhyay and others.
Performances: Vidya Balan as Durga Rani Singh and Vidya Sinha is outstanding. She powers Kahaani 2, glossing over its rough edges. Arjun Rampal did a decent job. That dimpled boy, Jugal Hansraj, who mouthed the famous song ‘Ghar Se Nikaltehi’ played his negative character well. Kharaj Mukherjee as the senior cop adds some humour to the otherwise dark movie.
Kahaani 2 can’t be stated as a sequel of Kahaani as it doesn't start with the note where the prequel left off. However, comparing the both is quite obvious and Kahaani 2 seems to be suffering from Kahaani’s hangover.
Keeping that aside, Sujay Ghosh brings an emotional, sensitive, human elements as a form of a gripping thriller. Not a flawless one but Kahaani 2 is a surely a must-watch and that for Vidya Balan,...
