Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Worth Watching

Jolly LLB was an enjoyable good movie. Directed by Subhash Kapoor, the prequel was shouldered by brilliant actors like Arshad Warsi and Saurabh Shukla but they don't have the tag of the stars.

So when the sequel was announced with Akshay Kumar, it brings out all sorts of mixed feelings in people. On the one hand, while a star comes with expectations along, there's somewhere there is a little regret seeing yet another a small film being hijacked by a star. But thankfully Kumar doesn't let his stardom overshadow his performance.

Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay) starts out as a prominent lawyer’s sidekick in Kanpur. Driven by ambition, he hoodwinks a pregnant widow, Hina Siddique (Sayani Gupta) on the lookout for justice. He lands the murder case of her husband, but when she realises he is a fraud, she kills herself. Leaving Jolly with guilt on his conscience and an unresolved case in his hands. Now, he wants justice more than ever.

At its core, Jolly LLB 2 is the story of the condition of courts in the country, much like its predecessor. Akshay Kumar is the driving force of this drama. Director Subhash Kapoor doesn't do enough to extract the best of Akshay's comic timing. But there are enough to get by. Saurabh Shukla's dialogues make you break into a laugh every now and then. The man steals the show.

Jolly LLB 2 feels stretched at times. It is a crowd-pleaser alright, but director Subhash Kapoor goes overboard with melodrama at certain points in the film. The film could have been a lot tighter and streamlined had the filmmaker concentrated on just the case. But no. It is an Akshay Kumar film. So you HAVE to have Akshay Kumar delivering lectures on patriotism in the courtroom. You have to have Akshay Kumar taking bullets on duty. You have to have Akshay Kumar breaking into song and dance at the drop of a hat, right when he's out of the hospital, ad nausea. Well, you do need the whistles for Kumar too.

Akshay changes shades from crooked to straight, like a chameleon. In top form, he puts up a perfect display of a street-smart lawyer who hasn’t read legal tomes but who has instead picked up tips from courtroom corridors to become Jolly LLB. Huma and Annu are also compelling enough. It is the fine display of histrionics by all these refined actors, which makes the movie, worth seeing.
