Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Jazbaa is definitely worth a watch. ____________________________________________________________________

Jazbaa’ is one of the much awaited  flicks in Bollywood this season as it marks the comeback of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It is a remake of the 2007 South Korean film Seven Days.  Rai's last film Guzaarish (2010) was a big flop and that could be the reason the actress has chosen more 'box office-friendly' projects like Jazbaa which is directed by most stylish director of bollywood Sanjay Gupta. Film going to hit the theatres today so lets find out whether ‘Jazbaa’  will be hit like Ashwarya's Dhoom 2, Guru, Jodha Akbar  or super flop like Raawan, Guzarish.

Story in Detail:-

Aishwarya Rai plays the role of Anuradha Varma, a successful lawyer by profession and also a single mother to Sanaaya (Sara Arjun) who fights cases for criminals and being an ambitious woman, she is guilt free of fighting cases for criminal until one day when it backfires.

Her daughter, Sanaaya gets kidnapped and as ransom the criminals ask Anuradha to get rapist and murderer, Miyaaz Shaikh (Chandan Roy Sanyal) out of jail in four days. Yohan (Irrfan Khan), a suspended cop, comes to help her.

The abductor watches every move of hers and makes sure that he is not caught by the police. The prosecutor is a longtime rival of Anuradha and he is determined to defeat her. How does Anuradha save her daughter forms the rest of the story.

Positive Points:-

The film’s story and taut screenplay are the highlights of the film. The movie is not just a thriller, it is an amalgamation of an awesome story, excellent performances and an amazing screenplay.

Speaking of performances, the very talented Ashiwarya proves what a powerhouse of talent she is and excels in her role. Her comeback performance in Jazbaa can undoubtedly be defined as one of her best till date. Right from the start, she made a dazzling appearance and performed with a lot of ease and enthusiasm. She displayed a spellbinding emotional performance in the climax.

Irrfan Khan has given yet another stellar performance in his impeccable trademark style. He manages to overshadow Ash in every sequence he is in. Well, the man is a true artist. On the other hand, veteran actress Shabana Azmi lends good support and is extremely expressive and shows her true potential, especially towards the climax sequences

Other actors like Jackie Shroff, Priya Banerjee, Siddhant Kapoor, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Atul Kulkarni excel in their respective roles. Adding much balance to the story, Sanjay Gupta provided some seriousness in the second half of the movie. The suspense factor in the film is executed in a superb way. Entertaining first half and the emotional climax are the major attractions of this movie.

Negative Points:-

There is no great deal of chemistry between the lead pair and the relationship is not so convincing.
The flow of the story slows down a bit in the second half of the movie.
This lets down the audience after an interesting first half. Few scenes looked lengthy and were dragged too much. The run time of 134 minutes seems to be a tad long given the current trend of Bollywood movies. Even though the climax has a few engaging moments, it has been dragged way too much

Technical Aspects:-

Sanjay Gupta is a talented director, and his narration has been perfect and the way he linked all the characters in the emotional climax is top notch. His direction is edgy as he does not experiment much in this remake.

Even though the narrative is quite simple, it is extremely nail bitting. The screenplay will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout, till the climax, which is again extremely engaging. Few emotional dialogues in the second half are also scripted well.

The music album of the film is average. The film’s cinematography by Sameer Arya is pretty captivating and the editing of the film is disappointing. The production values are nice and the makers have not compromised on any technical aspect.

Last Word:-

'Jazbaa' is compelling. If it were served like a food, it can be said, it was the meat of a meal with its vintage-like cinematography, pace and drama. And an ensemble that lived up-to its expectation.
