Verdict : Humshakals can be a one time watch if you are watching it at home ________________________________________________________________________
William Shakespeare's 'The Comedy Of Errors' was one popular play which was adapted by various bollywood Directors. Bimal Roy made 'Do Dooni Char', with Kishore Kumar and Gulzar made 'Angoor' with Sanjeev Kumar. 'Angoor' turned out to be one among India's finest adaptation of 'The Comedy Of Errors' and joined the elite list of the best comedies from our Hindi cinema. Almost three decades later, director Sajid Khan comes up with 'Humshakals' which seems to be weakly inspired by 'The Comedy Of Errors', but instead of two main protagonists Sajid gives us three main protagonists and that too in triple role instead of the double roles.
Sajid's Humshakals starring Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor, Tamannaah, Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta, the movie hits the theaters today, So let’s find out modern day adaptation of the classic comedy where stand ?
Story:-
Humshakals is the story of the confusion that takes place when three individuals have a lookalike of a lookalike, all with the same name. Ashok Singhania (Saif Ali Khan) is a successful businessman who does stand-up comedy as a hobby. His partner in crime is his best friend Kumar (Riteish Deshmukh). The two lead a successful life with the love of their lives, until Ashok’s cruel Mama (Ram Kapoor) plans a disaster to take over all his property and sends them to a mental asylum.
Here is where they meet their Humshakals, with the same names. While Mama uses their mental duplicates to achieve his goal, the original Ashok and Kumar too come across Mama’s duplicate mental named Johnny, who helps them get their property back.
When this does not work, the third set of Ashok, Kumar and Mama enter the scene. Will Mama be able to conquer all the property? Will Ashok and Kumar escape the asylum and destroy Mama, forms the rest of the story…
Positive Points:-
Riteish Deshmukh is the best part about the film. He is one person for whom comedy can never go wrong. Even if you find the movie not going anywhere, you sure want to sit through the film just to see his performance. He plays the role of Kumar, who is normal guy, and he pulls of his role with ease. The 2ndKumar that Riteish plays is that of a mental patient, whose mind is of a 5 year old. He does that so adorably that you can't take your eyes off him. The third Kumar has some feminist features is also done well, but of no use at all. Other than these he also plays a woman in one of the sequence of the film, and oh my God! What an amazing girl he looks. Even though he has done it once in Apna Sapna Money Money, this one seems to be an altogether different role, and doesn't seem repetitive.
Ram Kapoor looks cute and portrays a good act in his villain’s role. Speaking of actresses, Bipasha may have not have been given much space, but she looks so much better and hotter than Tamannaah or Esha.
A few scenes like the toilet one, the men dressed as women and the one where the warden makes his patients see bad movies as punishment, including Himmatwala, are the only good ones.
Negative Points:-
At the opening credits of the movie, there is a director’s note saying that one’s a wise man told him something, which he does not remember. Well, we totally believe him in this. Sajid sure does not seem to remember wise things.
While it is a good thing that Sajid went to what he does best, making slapstick comedy after the debacle Himmatwala, but let us tell you one thing that he probably has to redo his direction lessons.
Speaking of performances, Saif Ali Khan is surely a mis-fit in the role. Neither does he looks convincing nor he acts any closer. He has overdone his roles to so many extents.
Apart from being too fair, Tamannaah brings nothing to the film. Esha Gupta has nothing to do in the movie apart from appearing hot. Chunky Pandey has totally been wasted.
Technical Points:-
The director has definitely forgot the art of film making (not that he was ever good at it, but at least his movies made us giggle). Sajid again presents a comedy with just too many errors.
The story is too confusing with a lot of unwanted characters inserted in the screenplay. While it was hard to handle the double role of the three main leads, the director goes ahead to bring triple roles, which was purely unnecessary.
The music is very jarring and not very foot tapping either. Callertune and Khole De Dil Ki Khidki are the only decent ones in the film. We can't really blame Himesh Reshammiya for this, after The Xpose he sure was quite disturbed himself.
Cinematography is good and so is the editing. The background score is average.
In Short, Humshakals is a cut copy paste of his previous movies. A night suit song, a Disco track, the same chaos in the climax . It has some of the poorest jokes that would not even qualify as a poor joke. With triple roles of three characters in the film, it is three times more tiresome.
