Ram Gopal Varma, Anuraag Kashyap, Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra, Madhur Bhandarkar are those directors who managed to bridge the gap between commercial movie and art movie. Their films used to be realistic, yet, entertaining or engaging. Many films of these directors are known as path-breaking films and managed to bag the national awards for its dark content. But the success not only boosts the efficiency of the director, but sometimes also corrupts them to make films with their successive formula's only. Once they get into the latter position, they end up in a dilemma as whenever they try to make something different or repeat their successive act, they fail to match up to the basic expectations of their audience. Ram Gopal Varma, Anurag Kashyap and Madhur Bhandarkar are the perfect examples of those directors as their last released films had their style of film-making and despite of that, failed miserably at the box office. Thus, let's find out whether Madhur Bhandarkar will strike back with his expertise of film making in his recently released film 'Calender Girls' or might end up being yet another repetitive attempt by the ace film maker.
 
Story :-

'Calender Girls' is a story of five girls Nandita (Akanksha Puri), Nazneen (Avani Modi), Sharan Pinto (Kyra Dutt), Mayuri Chauhan (Ruhi Singh) and Paroma Ghosh (Satarupa Pyne), who hail from different cities of India to get featured in the country's top most calendars. After the launch, all of them get famous and set out on their own paths leading to richness and film acting. Sadly, things do not happen as they had planned and what happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Positive Points :-

The only good thing about the film is that there is little realism in Bhandarkar’s so-called realistic film. Yet other plus point is Atul who lightens up a few moments with his old-school filmy secretary act.
You will genuinely laugh a few times when the tech-savvy Ruhi Singh asks continuously for selfies only to instantly upload them on Twitter. His character is the only saving point of the film that makes a little sense. Well, apart from these few moments there is nothing good about this film.

Negative Points :-

The only new thing the filmmaker tries to portray is the celeb obsession with social media, rest all is repetitive and boring. Overall, illogical scenes and unnecessary erotic scenes make the film out of place.

The director has chosen a wonderful story for the film, but he has failed to execute his ideas on-screen. Post interval, the entire second half is dead slow as the story goes haywire. There are many logical errors in the film and the climax lacks clarity.

The movie is far too stretched making it even for boring. A few scenes of the movie are so outdated, that one cannot help but laugh at the silliness of the makers and the actors. The climax and the dialogues are a disappointment.

Technical Points :-

Technically, the movie is dreadful, especially the annoying background music, which is the only thing that tells you when a joke comes up, when no one is actually getting it. Another bad thing about the film is its tacky visual effects.

The screenplay is confusing, induced of bad metaphors and extremely boring.The film is over-dramatized to huge extents. The dialogues are absurd and even the funniest ones are not even remotely funny.

The first half an hour of the film failed to make any sense what-so-ever. The characters could not be established and the sequences only confused the audiences.

Last Word :-

Calendar Girls is Madhur Bhandarkar's weakest attempt at trying to revisit his old formula and create something interesting. Stay away.
