‘Bajirao Mastani’, the story of the brave Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao looked promising from the very initial day of trailer releasing and while promotion done extensively. It kept audience in a loop and interest alive with the quintessential classical music, grandeur set, extraordinary cinematography and star-studded casting, that made us known Sanjay Leela Bhansali is coming with another most gorgeous film with power-packed performances of Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. As today Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum open releases, let’s check out what the film has to deliver, here is our review.
Story:-
The film rotates around the narrative of the Maratha warrior Peshwa (Prime Minister) Bajirao of the Maratha Empire and his second wife Mastani. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone have played the titular roles, while Priyanka Chopra showed up as Bajirao's first wife Kashibai. The story itself is classic - a slice of 17th -18th century history. In a time of Peshwas and Maratha warriors as the ruler, and the most successful warrior, Bajirao (Ranveer), a Brahmin who fell in love with Mastani (Deepika Padukone), a dancer and a warrior princess with half Muslim blood. As Bajirao was already married to Kashi (Priyanka Chopra) - what happens when Bajirao's family declares war on his love?
Performances:-
Ranveer adopts the Marathi accent like a duck to water, conveys his best performance in his career, leaving even Lootera. desperate-on-occasion, energetic at-others Bajirao, Singh is enchanting. Deepika'sMastani can put to death with her intense look without kohl eyes. She is as lively and flawless with the sword, as with her words.
As Kashibai, Priyanka Chopra revives the agony of a lady who has needed to acknowledge 'the other lady' in her life. Tanvi Azmi plays the scary female authority with vivacity. The supporting cast makes a spectacular showing with all their particular parts. Milind Soman and Mahesh Manjrekar must be specially mentioned for their performances.
Whats hot:-
Apart from intense performances, the sets, production design and cinematography of Bajirao Mastanideserve an overwhelming applause. So terrific and rococo is everything about this film you're at loss of words. The scenes before you are stunning. Thumbs up! for Sudeep Chatterjee's camera and Bhansali's eye for delightful sophistication.
Whats not:-
As per the film’s duration of 2 hours and 45 mins, the editing could have been much crisper. As we said Deepika looks stunning with unkohled eyes but yet her contact lenses doubts on authenticity of a historical figure. No grievance on Priyanka's performances or dialog delivery. Despite of that, her definitive over use of "chaala" is not sufficient to bring genuineness of being a royal Marathi lady.
End Note:-
Taking all things together, Bajirao Mastani is an experience, one that should be appreciated in a theater.
