Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Good watch

Director Shaad Ali’s Ok Jaanu is an official Hindi remake of Shaad Ali’s mentor Mani Ratnam’s 2015 Tamil film O Kadhal Kanmani (Oh My Love, The Apple of My Eye), otherwise known as OK Kanmani, starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen.

Ratnam has produced the Bollywood version in partnership with Karan Johar and is credited with the story and screenplay here too.

To start with, Ok Jaanu is a progressive love story at several levels – right from the young couple breaking all sorts of gender stereotypes (and not just for the sake of breaking, but naturally flaunting new-age gender neutrality) to the older couple extending another reversal of gender roles and a heart-warming and uplifting climax.

Shraddha Kapoor is an architect who wants to study in France, Aditya is a video game designer who wishes to work in the US. Tara and Adi meet by chance, are drawn to each other and decide to move in together for the few months they have in Mumbai before they go abroad.

“Is this love?” she asks him towards the start. She stops him from answering and he does not try further to respond at that point. Early on, they agree that marriage and babies are not for them. But as expected, much sex and six months later, they grow on each other and are confused.

The chemistry between the duo sparks instantly, the best part being that they are both on the same page as far as marriage is concerned – they enjoy each other’s company but do not want the commitment that comes with tying the knot.
Mani Ratnam’s screenplay is the star of the movie, and the actors are natural and energetic enough to convincingly portray it on screen. While Aditya and Shraddha share a naturally organic chemistry, Nasser and Leela remind us why they are two of the best among veteran actors today.

AR Rahman’s music and Gulzar’s pen add to the charismatic, positive vibe of the movie – while the music keeps it peppy and new-age, Gulzar’s dialogues ensure that melodrama does not overpower the film.

Watch it if you believe in love or not. In fact, Ok Jaanu is probably one of the most heart-warming romances you have seen in Bollywood.
