Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Just go and watch Mary Kom for Priyanka and her hard work that she has put in. __________________________________________________________

There was a time when films with sports as its backdrop, failed to find its deserved audience. Though films like 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar', 'Lagaan', 'Chak De India', 'Iqbal' and few more changed the whole scenario. These films not only inspired our filmmakers to make more sports based films matching up to the international standards but also some of them went ahead to make biopics like 'Paan Singh Tomar' and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. After the heart-rending story of Milkha Singh, the next athlete whose story had to be captured on celluloid is Mary Kom. Director Omung Kumar and producer Sanjay Leela Bansali have teamed up for the Mary Kom biopic starring the National Award Winning actress Priyanka Chopra. The movie hits the theatres tomorrow and we gets you a review earlier and so let’s see how it turns out to be…

Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra) aims to be a boxer since her childhood, but her father is against her idea of taking up boxing as a career. Mary goes against his wishes and takes up boxing and she quickly trains under the guidance of her coach M Narjit Singh (Sunil Thapa). Pretty soon, she goes on to win many titles and ends up making family and country proud.

Unfortunately, her coach abandons her when she decides to get married. As expected, due to her marriage and motherhood, her professional life takes a back seat. However, with the help of her supportive husband who does everything possible to get her back in the boxing ring, she gets back to boxing again.

But will she be able to compete in the same way she earlier used to? What happens to her in her journey? The answers to these questions are what forms the rest of ‘Mary Kom’ …

Positive points:-

Priyanka Chopra is outstanding and gives yet another flawless performance. Her physical efforts deserve special mention and is something which has never been done in our Hindi film industry by any actress. She acts amazingly well and her hard work and determination shows very clearly in the film. Hats off to the make-up artist who has made her look somewhat like Mary. Its due to her presence and performance would like to add one extra star to the ratings.

Priyanka's coach played by Sunil Thapa and her on-screen husband Darshan Kumar have put enough effort to do justice to their respective roles. The last twenty minutes of the film with the training session and the last match was the only interesting part of the film.

Negative points:-

Debutant director Omang Kumar comes up with a brilliant concept, but fails to do justice to it. He focuses more on the personal happenings of Mary Kom rather than the one she is known for. The intensity of the film is mellowed down due to low production values. Also, one will find many brand promotions in the film, out of which few were placed in those eras, when they din't even exist.

The first half is only filled with her boxing matches and also contains a few incomplete elements of Mary’s life from her childhood to her pregnancy. Merely a few minutes in the movie and Priyanka has already become a three time world champion.

The second half on the other hand has a few unbelievable elements including the part where Mary’s husband tells her about her son’s illness just before her match.

Technical Aspects:-

The movie lacks immensely in the technical department and the direction by Omung is not up-to-the mark. He has not put in any effort to make his best debut film memorable. In fact the weak direction also make the characters appear dull at quite a few places. The songs of the film are just average and leave no impact as such. The screenplay of the film jumps awkwardly and the editing is too weak.
