Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : ‘Guddu Rangeela’ has an equal dose of impressive and unimpressive aspects. But the film can be given one watch.

Subhash Kapoor returns to direction after his National Award-winning film ‘Jolly LLB’ with another story based on real life events. After hit-and-run last time, it is honour killings this time, can Kapoor create the same magic this time as well?

Story:

The story, as shown in the trailer is about cousins Guddu (Amit Sadh) and Rangeela (Arshad Warsi) who are part of an entertaining orchestra singing quirky songs like ‘Mata Ka Email’. Several gangs are battling to gain supremacy in Haryana and ‘Guddu Rangeela’ earn an extra buck by acting as ‘khabris’ and passing secrets from one gang to another. These activities land them behind bars where Rs. 10 lakh is the price they have to pay to escape from prison. That when self-confessed mafia PR Bengali( Dibyendu Bhattacharaya) presents them the plan of kidnapping deaf and mute Baby (Aditi Rao Hydari) which they agree as that was the only option for them.

At the same time, there is an evil politician Billo (Ronit Roy) who is ruling the crime scene in the village. This is when numerous twists and turns come up in the script. Rangeela and Baby both have interesting tragic stories for which they are out to seek revenge. The plot basically encompasses whether this quest for revenge is successful or not and if Guddu Rangeela also succeed in achieving love.

Positive points:

The performance of Arshad Warsi stands out in the film. Despite being a two-hero project, he comes across as the ‘hero’ with his brilliant performance in both comic and emotional scenes. Though Ronit Roy as the baddie has enacted such mean characters in ‘Udaan’ and ‘Boss’, he has delivered a fine performance. The first half of the film moves at a slick pace where funny scenes and sharply directed scenes create a brilliant foundation for the second half. Some of the witty lines mouthed by the actors and their mannerisms will definitely connect with the locals familiar with the lingo. The song ‘Mata Ka Email’ also will entertain audiences with its clever lines and Indian music.

Negative points:

The second half of the film is a big letdown considering the fashion in which the first half was set up. The pliot doesn’t remain tight and falters towards the end. Amit Sadh and Aditi Rao Hydari have given a mediocre performance and are clearly overshadowed by Arshad and Ronit. The music except for ‘Mata Ka Email’ fails to enhance the storyline of the film.

Technical points:

The background score by Hitesh Sonik is one of the highlights of the film heightening the tension and twists in the film very well. The script’s inconsistency is the major reason why the film doesn’t work on the whole. The screenplay struggles between trying to be a film addressing social message, romance and friendship but ends up being none of them. The editing by Arindham Ghatak fails as he fails to hold the attention. The action sequences by Pradyuman Kumar and cinematography by James Fowlds are also mediocre.
