Movie Review
Rating :
Verdict : Alone isn't as horrifically bad as most Bollywood horror flicks tend to be. So you can watch one time
The first real horror movie made by the Indian film industry was Kamal Amrohi's
Mahal in 1949, after that many filmmakers like
Ramsay Brothers, Javed Khan and Mohan Bhakri tried their hands in the horror-movie due to its low budget and high profitability. Most of these films had few regular faces such as Deepak Parasher, Raj Kiran, Javed Khan, Hemant Birje, Navin Nischol, etc but the most popular face among todays actors in horror films is of Bipasha Basu. Bipasha was seen in many horror films like 'Raaz', 'Raaz 3', 'Darna Zaroori Hai', 'Aatma', 'Rakth' and 'Creature'. Her latest offering is 'Alone' and the sizzling promos have created a good amount of curiosity. The Film is a remake of a 2007 Thai film by the same name. Starring Karan Singh Grover and directed by Bhushan Patel it hits the theatres today. So, let's find out whether 'Alone' will be another winner in Bipasha Basu's hit horror films basket or might suffer the same fate as her last film 'Creatur' did.
Story:-
The story of the Alone revolves around conjoined twins Anjana and Sanjana (both played by Bipasha Basu). The two sisters love each other very much and wish to share the same bond throughout their life, until one day Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) enters their lives.
Both the girls fall in love with him but Kabir is attracted towards Sanjana. This makes Anjana jealous. Kabir is about to leave town and while he tries to bid good bye to Sanjana, Anjana does not leave her. Upset with her behaviour, Sanjana demands to be separated from her sister but during the surgery, Anjana dies.
In the present time, Sanjana and Kabir are together and happen to return to India after Sanjana’s mother has a stroke. Here Kabir sees Anjana’s room being locked, which contains all her toys and memories. This makes him angry and he demands the room to be opened which also frees Anjana’s spirit. Anjana’s ghost seeks revenge from her sister.
What is the reason behind Anjana’s revenge and does she get it? What happens to Kabir and Sanjana forms the rest of the story…
Positive Points:-
There have been a number of attempts by Bollywood, to actually come up with a Horror flick that stays true to its genre, without being unintentionally funny. However, only handfuls have been successful to an extent in achieving that. Alone, in the other hand, falls between the latter and the former. Alone has some extremely scary parts, including the first scene, which is quite spooky.
However, when it comes to performances, it is Bipasha Basu, who steals the whole show. The actress, who is also termed as the Queen of horrors own the movie with her amazing acting and beauty. For a debutante, Karan Singh Grover has done a decent job.
Also the chemistry between Bipasha and Karan is to watch out for. It is too hot to handle.
Negative Points:-
There seems to be some problem with Karan’s pronunciation and dialogue delivery. So many words coming out of his mouth appear funny. Rest of the cast of the film doesn’t have much significance in front of the leading actors. The start of the film is dull and a few parts in the story line are confusing.
Even though the steamy portions are hot, their additions in the second half of the film feel unnecessary and are inserted only to add in the X factor. Adding in some more spook instead of all the love making scenes, could have worked in favour of the film.
Technical Points:-
The movie is directed by Bhushan Patel, who has earlier helmed two horror films in the past and even though he has done a pretty decent task, his technique of direction does remind you of his old horror movies. The background score and the film’s special effects manage to spook the audiences a little bit.
Speaking of the audio album, the songs are fine, but are surely a hindrance in the plot. The cinematography is fine and so is the editing. Just like many other bollywood movies, Alone too gets predictable with time. However, the climax is a good refreshment.
