Thappad, starring Taapsee Pannu, writer-director Anubhav Sinha and co-writer Mrunmayee Laagoo have succeeded in creating a relatable and much needed wakeup call!
Thappad is set in Delhi, it’s a story of Amrita (Taapsee) a upper middle class housewife, extremely happy with her life. She looks after the house, her husband, mother in law, friends and family, she does it all with a smile and a lot of pride. Until one day, Amirta gets slapped by her husband for no apparent reason. During a party, Amrita’s husband Vikram (Pavail) slaps her, which wakes up Amirta from the long slumber and she starts to re-evaluate the relationship and her life. The slap triggers the turmoil in Amrita, she starts to question her value system, her beliefs and address the much needed issue, deep-rooted chauvinism.
Recently, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha declared that Thappad, is meant to be the concluding feature of his ''discrimination trilogy''. Starting with Mulk, which addressed the bigotry in the name of religion, and Article 15, his take on oppression on the basis of caste and now, Thappad, which aims to highlight the gender discrimination!
The story, screen play, even the subtext is well written and executed with finesse. A cast of proven talents excels in well-crafted roles - Taapsee Pannu’s career-defining act is just sublime.
Actress Taapsee and Pavail have done a remarkable job in addressing the issue of gender and domination with their nuanced performance. Actors such as Dia Mirza, Tanvi Azmi, Kumud Mishra, Ram Kapoor and more hold the film with their stunning performances.
The film resonates with impact and doesn’t preach. The film is without a doubt one of the finer films audience will see this year, simply because it tackles a difficult and powerful subject with credibility.
The film co-produced byBhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. It is co-written by Mrunmayee Lagoo.
