Writer, Lyricist, and comedian Varun Grover, who penned the entire album of Merry Christmas said that the songs are narrative driven and takes the story forward. 
 
Varun Grover along with Sriram Raghavan, Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanjay Kapoor, Ramesh Taurani and more, was interacting with the media during the promotional press-meet of Merry Christmas. 
 
When asked about joining Merry Christmas as songwriter, Varun said, “It was a huge deal for me to get a call to work on Merry Christmas as a lyric writer capacity with Sriram Raghavan, who was creating this other kind of intimate world. Cherry on the top for me was Pritam, I’d always wanted to work with him, I have been a fan for the longest, I did the whole album of Merry Christmas with him, right after working on Chal Ve Watna for Dunki.”  
 
“Best part of the Merry Christmas album is that all the songs are narrative driven, none of the songs are separate from the film, they are part of the movie and take the story forward” added Varun. 
 
Apart from being a songwriter, Varun has written award winning movies such as Masaan, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and series such as Scared Games. 
 
When asked whether writers are now more respected and sought after, Varun credited new cinema makers and directors for writers being respected. 
 
He said, “People are looking for writers, they are seeking writers, and writers are being respected, it has a lot to do with the new kind of cinema which is being made. People like Sriram Raghavan, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, and more, have been making new kind of cinema for the last 10-15 years. Writers are respected because they are creating new kind of stories, which only he can narrate, and they are not generic.” 
 
Merry Christmas is directed by Sriram Raghavan. Filmed simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil, the film stars Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles, slated for 12th Jan 2024 release.
