Ace director and writer Vikram Bhatt says digital space is a storytellers delight sue to its restriction-free nature. The filmmaker has ventured into digital with the launch of hi over the top content platform called VBontheweb, which brings for the theatre on the web concept where one plays only for the premium show one wishes to binge watch.
Filmmaker Vikram was asked if the change in preference to watch films on phones and not theaters has affected him personally, he said, " I am not a filmmaker, I am a storyteller, there is a difference. I have done Television also and I have written a book also. I like to tell stories and this journey actually started on Facebook. I used to write a story a day and those stories became so popular that I started getting offers from a lot of production houses to make short films on them. That's where my interest in the digital space grew.
A storyteller needs some platform to tell a story, so it doesn't matter to me if you watch it on a phone or a theater. It doesn't matter to me personally as long as I have a story to tell. This medium is far more freedom giving than films. You can take your time to draw your story out to 15 episodes and you don't have any restrictions. As a matter of fact, it is a storytellers delight." he added.
Vikram at the press conference on Wednesday disclosed the app will allow users to buy a pass to watch a single show/entire series for fees as normal as INR 18.00 instead of the standard app subscription. With this Bhatt wishes to bring a substantial change in the digital space and give a choice to the viewers.
When asked if he plans on releasing a full-length feature film on a digital medium, Bhatt said, I think that day is not far because it is all about numbers. We have to see how many people watch the avg medium to low budget film, and then we decide. I started my channel about a year and a half back and already in that time, there have been so many changes. I think it is a matter of months before you will see films releasing directly on the digital medium."
The app went live on Vikram Bhatt's birthday 27th Jan 2018. It is currently available to download on IOS and Android platforms.
The app was launched on the platform hosted by Brightcove, one of the pioneers of online video streaming and has been developed by Ecreeds.
