Verdict : "Welcome 2 Karachi" is a poor desi version of the "Dumb and the Dumber".
Welcome to Karachi once again brings the hit and entertaining pair, of Jacky Bhagnai and Arshad Warsi, on screen after F.A.L.T.U. According past records most of Vashu Bhagnani’s films after Biwi No. 1 (1999) have met disappointment at the box office. Even Jacky have not tasted the taste of success after F.A.L.T.U. All his films like Kal Kisne Dekha, Ajab Gazabb Love, Rangreezz and Youngistan failed to please the audience. But this time Jacky is entering the comedy genre with his lucky co star Arshad Warsi. So lets see Welcome to Karachi which will be another sleeper hit like 'F.A.L.T.U' or might add on to the long list of flops and disasters produced by Mr.Bhagnanai.
'Welcome 2 Karachi' is a story of Shammi Takhur (Arshad Warsi) and Kedar Patel (Jackky Bhagnani) who, while partying, accidently crosses the Indian ocean and land up in Pakistan. There was an incident of bomb blast on that particular day and on that particular place where these two arrive. Pakistani intelligence officer Shazia (Laurel Gottlied) gets hold of Shammi's wallet and starts searching for Shammi and Kedar on the streets of Karachi. Meanwhile, Shammi and Kedar keep wandering right from the Mafia to the Taliban camps where they are trained to become a Taliban assassin. Now their struggle to return to their home country is what forms the rest of the story…
The makers come up with a concept tried and tested before, but with a different approach. The first half of the film possess situations which will keep the viewers entertained and on the edge of their seats. Also the writer of the film is brave enough to take a dig at some of the forbidden topics and make fun of it in the best way.
Speaking of performances, Arshad Warsi is a proficient actor and his talent is seen in a few sequences in the, including the one with the Indo-Pak cricket match. Jackky Bhagnani as a Gujarati boy is good. Lauren Gotleib showcases her dancing skulls brilliantly and provides the necessary X factor in the film, Pakistani actors, Ayub Khoso and Adnan Shah and decent.
Now, we know the dialogue has already become too clichéd, but this definitely deserves ‘leaving your brains at home’. Welcome To Karachi is a desi take on Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels classic Dumb and Dumber and yet another story with two stupid protagonists trying to escape the stupidest of situation. It is sad how bollywood perceives every man in Pakistan to be a stanch believer of violence. The movie showcases even the sabziwala carrying a gun and all set to kill someone. Lauren Gotileb is a great dancer, and that is the only thing she should focus on right now. She is not a good actress and sure needs immense training in the area. We are sorry to say, that this film too will prove to bring no good to poor Jackky’s career.
Technically, the movie is dreadful, especially the annoying background music, which is the only thing that tells you when a joke comes up, when no one is actually getting it. Another bad thing about the film is its tacky visual effects. Ashish R Mohan too needs too brush up his direction skills, as his style of filmmaking seems inconsistent. While the first half have a few funny sequences and situations, the second half seems completely out of place. The story gets dragged eventually, leading to an pointlessly prolonged climax. The audio album of the film is fine, but the songs have been very wrongly placed in the screenplay.
Overall, the production values of the film are of good quality. The setting and locales can safely pass off as Pakistan. Kudos to the art director.
Director Ashish R. Mohan seems to have a flair for action, but could have concentrated on quality humour as well. The dialogues, though witty at times seem like a feeble effort to make the audience laugh.
