Verdict : Batti Gul Meter Chalu desperately wants to be funny
Batti Chul Meter Chalu takes on a responsibility which it does not want follow through. Director Shree Narayan Singh after Toilet ek prem katha takes the idea of presenting serious issues with entertainment way too seriously.
The Shahid Kapoor starrer had the capability of turning into another Akshay Kumar starrer but after taking the steps to make the movie serious the makers taken down the entire effort to present a complete entertainer with no actual consequences.
The film without diving into the issue takes an entire hour and half to talk about S.K played by Shahid Kapoor, Tripathi played by Divyendu Sharma and Nauti played by Shraddha Kapoor. As childhood friends they have great understanding when it comes to friendship, love for each other and their relationship with Nauti. They both want to marry her and are waiting for her to choose one.
While that is part of the story it doesn't really affect or change much in the story, without spoiling any details all I will disclose is, the hero isn't always the right guy.
Shahid, Shraddha and Divyendu play the part they have been told to the mark until they actually have to show the emotions. At times it becomes hard to believe what is going on in the film or the court. While you can imagine lawyers using dirty tricks to get the court in your favor, here having a relaxed judge makes things much- much lighter for Shahid to keep joking about everything around him.
There aren't any moments that will keep you wishing for more but you sure do keep wishing for something more than serious issues lined with silly jokes till the end.
S.K (Shahid Kapoor), Nauti (Shraddha Kapoor), and Tripathi (Divyendu Sharma) are childhood friends. S.K is a hypocrite, mean lawyer making money from out of court settlements. Nauti is an over the top fashion designer who thinks highly of herself.
Things were breezy until Tripathi opens a small town Printing Press. Within months, he is charged with an Inflated elctricity bill of 1.5 Lakhs, which escalates to 54 Lakhs in the following months. With no where to go and complain, Tripathi commits suicide. S.K is set aback by the events and has a change of heart. He decides to fight out against SPTL , a Privatised Electricity Company responsible for the Inflated Bills. Whether or not he is able to sue the company forms the rest of the story.
