Verdict : Brings all the patriotic feels.
The film plays the right tricks to bring out the best. It talks about your love for your country and its respect on the international front.
The film starts with Indian team winning the gold medal under the British India name and then Tapan and Samrat (captain) take the oath that they will bring the Gold home as a free country.
Tapan who managed the team after Olympics loses his way and ends up as a cheat alcoholic gambler who is obsessed with bringing the gold home. So much so that he has nothing else to look forward in his life. Akshay Kumar plays Tapan like he had played any other role in the past movies, true to its core. He is bad but he isn't a bad person and he manages to show both.
Tapan throughout the movie adds narration pulling the movie forward scene by scene, chapter by chapter. Which makes it look like Gold his story. But, on the other hand, is not sure what it is about, Tapan, the players, the team or the goal for winning the gold.
The movie talks about the effects of British rule on India, effects of World War II on India and even the separation of India-Pakistan which shapes the story and the Hockey team that will play for the country. When everything falls apart Samrat the retired captain comes to the rescue and helps blend the team in hope to full fill their dream.
Apart from Akshay Kumar, Kunal Kapoor (Samrat), Amith Sadh (Thakur) and Sunny Kaushal (Himmat Singh) have played their charming and athletic self. The film's second half picks up the pace with more matches and fights between the team members. It drives to the edge of your seat and makes you crave for the best results for Tapan and his team.
The only thing that kept me from enjoying the film completely is its fake lighting and background uses. The bokeh effect videography has been used for even trivial scenes like Tapan talking to Imtiaz (Vineet Kumar Singh) in Delhi sitting by the red fort. I understand them being used for the shots in the grounds, for matches but it separated the actors too much from their surrounding.
Gold is an upcoming 2018 Indian sports film directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner Excel Entertainment. It is a biopic based on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh Sr., who was on the team that won the first Olympic medal for India as a free nation in 1948.
